The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has achieved a major milestone in port digitalisation by launching an indigenous, paperless Harbour Management System (HMS) along with an independent in-house Vessel Traffic Service (iVTS).

Developed in collaboration with the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC), the HMS integrates vessel scheduling, pilotage, resource management, IoT inputs, safety monitoring and sustainability tracking into a unified digital platform aligned with global standards.

JNPA has also moved away from the earlier third-party VTS arrangement and initiated AIS-based real-time vessel monitoring through its own iVTS, enabling faster and data-driven decision-making.

Chairperson Gaurav Dayal, IAS, stated that the transition to indigenous digital systems enhances transparency, efficiency and safety while improving the port’s global competitiveness.

Under Phase-I, all ship movement data is being captured digitally through the “Thagaval” Pilot App, integrated with billing and the National Logistics Portal. Phase-II trials are underway to digitally track all marine logistics assets. From January 1, 2026, all marine operations have shifted to the newly operational Port Facility Centre (PFC), further strengthening JNPA’s real-time operational capabilities.
