Tuticorin, July 27, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated a major step toward India’s clean energy goals by laying the foundation stone for a high-capacity power transmission system developed by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID). The new infrastructure project will enable the evacuation of 2,000 MW of clean nuclear energy from Units 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) and distribute it across southern India.

Implemented under the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS), the POWERGRID Kudankulam Transmission Limited initiative involves the construction of a 400 kV double circuit (quad) transmission line connecting the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant to the Tuticorin-II GIS substation. Additionally, it includes the installation of high-voltage GIS terminal equipment to strengthen the grid and enhance energy transmission efficiency.

This project is a crucial part of India’s broader strategy to integrate sustainable and non-fossil fuel energy sources into the national grid. The transmission line will help distribute nuclear-generated power to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry, addressing the rising energy demands of these states while supporting environmental commitments.

Aligned with India’s national target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, the project marks a major advancement in clean energy infrastructure and grid modernization. With POWERGRID’s adoption of cutting-edge technologies, digital tools, and automation, the organization continues to deliver best-in-class system availability, averaging over 99.84%.

The foundation ceremony witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Union Minister of State Dr. L Murugan, Tamil Nadu’s Agriculture Minister Thangam Thenarasu, Social Welfare Minister P Geetha Jeevan, MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, and top officials from the Central and State Governments and POWERGRID.
