Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna CPSU under the Ministry of Power, has further bolstered India’s electricity network by acquiring two key TBCB (Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding) projects — Vindhyachal Varanasi Transmission Limited and SR WR Power Transmission Limited — worth Rs. 3,375 crore (estimated).
The Vindhyachal Varanasi Transmission Project, acquired from PFC Consulting Limited on October 16, 2025, involves establishing a 765 kV substation at Prayagraj and transmission lines across Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to relieve congestion and support Pump Storage Projects (PSPs) in the region.
The SR WR Power Transmission Project, acquired from REC Power Development & Consultancy Limited on October 17, 2025, aims to strengthen inter-regional connectivity between Southern and Western grids, spanning Karnataka and Maharashtra. This project will facilitate renewable energy integration, particularly from Bidar Power Station, enhancing import-export capability within the Southern Grid.
These acquisitions mark a crucial step in enhancing India’s power transmission reliability, renewable energy integration, and achieving the national goal of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. As of September 30, 2025, POWERGRID operates 286 substations, over 1,80,864 ckm of transmission lines, and 5,81,831 MVA transformation capacity, maintaining a 99.80% system availability through advanced automation and digital solutions.
