Surbendu Thakur, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the 2016 batch of the Income Tax cadre, has been appointed as Under Secretary (TPL-IV) in the TPL Division of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in the Department of Revenue on deputation basis. The appointment was made through Office Order No. 203 of 2023, dated August 15, 2023.
Thakur is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. He has held a number of important positions in the Income Tax department, including Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax (Investigation), Mumbai; Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), Delhi; and Joint Commissioner of Income Tax (TDS), Mumbai.
He is a recipient of the President’s Award for Distinguished Service.
In his new role, Thakur will be responsible for providing policy and technical guidance on the implementation of the Transfer Pricing (TP) regime in India. He will also be involved in the development of TP guidelines and procedures, and the conduct of TP audits and investigations.
Thakur’s appointment is seen as a positive development by the tax community. He is known for his expertise in TP matters, and his appointment is expected to strengthen the CBDT’s efforts to combat tax evasion and avoidance through TP.
